Basel Country: Dorneck and Angenstein Castle

We will start from Angenstein Castle near Aesch train station in Basel Country side. The Angenstein Castle was founded in the middle of the 13th century by the for a strategic outpost between Basel and the Jura area, and it caught fire few times in its history. It was renovated again in 1990s and is currently managed by the city of Basel.

As we walk from Angenstein castle to Dorneck castle – we will get a wonderful view of the countryside farmhouses, cherry trees and perhaps stopover at some castle ruins before hopping through the woods to Dornach. We could continue the walk through the woods by the side of the suburb of Dornach, or take the Schlossweg that leads up a winding route up to the ruins of Dorneck Castle. Dorneck Castle built around 1000 years ago, and is situated on a hill top and surrounded by dense woodlands. The Castle is a Swiss heritage site and From here you can see over most of the lower Birstal valley. Equipped with barbecue areas and picnic areas, the location is excellent for a summer excursion. After a short walk you reach the nearby restaurant Schlosshof. A path lined with old oaks leads up to the castle ruin. Through mostly in ruins it today consists of a well preserved tower and wall remains.

On the way back, if time permits we could visit Goetheanumwith a very unique architecture – it is the world center for the anthroposophical movement. The building was designed by Rudolf Steiner and named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.  It’s a pleasant walk by the side of the river back to Aesch if you would like to finish a round circuit, or take a train ride back to Basel from Dornach.
