Sicily For The Family

Written by Anika Gera Apr 24, 2023

There is something in Sicily for everyone. Our family has just returned from an amazing Sicilian adventure. Here’s what different age groups think about it.

What young children say about Sicily

Sicily was quite a delightful experience for me with good scenic places. If I had to give a rating to the place it would be eight out of ten. This is definitely because of the gelato and the fact that we bought new things! I really loved Catania because it was so pretty. Playing on the beach was amazing and I loved being there. Next time we should spend time on the beach while eating gelato!

What tweens and teens say about Sicily

Sicily was very nice. I liked the sea and the gelato. It was different from other places in Europe that I can remember. There were so many things to see and do. The culture was very rich. I loved driving across the hilly terrain with beautiful views all around. I enjoyed the food, especially gelato. We had a great time walking through the towns in Sicily. We feel one should take their time visiting all the different places to really soak up the atmosphere.

It was interesting to hear about the history of the Mafia and Anti-Mafia Movement in Corleone. Castelbueno had a quaint old-town feel that I really liked.

Mount Etna had breathtaking views. The cold, crisp air was invigorating as we hiked up one of the craters. The peak of the mountain was visible from many places around. Mount Etna is a must-see, especially if you like Greek mythology. Typhon, a fearsome giant, is said to have been trapped under Mount Etna by Zeus, the king of gods. The forges of Hephaestus were said to be under it. Palermo, Ragusa and Catania were also very interesting places to visit. The Valley of Temples was very beautiful as well.

What adults say about Sicily

Before going into the holiday, I didn’t know how much Sicily had to offer. Sicily was different from all the usual haunts in Europe. It is less developed than the rest of the continent, but more pristine. I loved learning about the history associated with Sicily; it was very enriching.

There aren’t just ‘old towns’- it has sea, sand, forgotten places. Sicily is well-connected by road, which allowed us to move around and visit a lot of places. There were so many different places to see. I liked experiencing the culture through locations, sights, cuisines, people, and stories. I loved walking through old towns, through beautiful streets and alleys. Driving through Sicily was a great decision on our part as we could enjoy the spectacular views of hills and small towns.

Corleone was an amazing place to visit due to the fact that people were unusually warm and nice there. I really  loved the Mafia and Anti-Mafia Movement there. Easter made Corleone feel special. Taornima had stunning cliffside visuals and beautiful cobblestone alleys. The view of Mount Etna was breathtaking. I really loved southern Sicily. It is slightly less touristy than the northern part, as well as more easygoing and natural. The various churches and cathedrals across Sicily were beautiful, with amazing architecture and carefully sculpted figures. I loved sitting in the cathedrals and just enjoying the paintings and the peace. We loved going to local places to eat, especially small trattorias. Make sure to try different dishes.

Enjoy, absorb, and experience each place you go to. We feel one should give each place the right amount of time. The main cities are worth visiting, but so are places off the track like rural and southern Sicily. If you are travelling in April or May, get ready for some rain! Make sure to pack an umbrella or raincoat. Word to the wise, do not miss the gelato. We had almost one gelato stop a day, and that made the trip more memorable. And, finally, we believe Sicily is a great place for family vacations. It is very welcoming to children. The bigger the group, the better!
