Venice’s Lido island is flat, so exploring it on a bicycle is a wonderful way. If you want a long ride, you can cycle to the southernmost point and take your bicycle on a ferry across to the next island, then you have a long flat ride of about 9 kilometers to reach the village of Pellestrina. It is an original fishing village with pretty brightly colored houses on the sea front and a range of picturesque shacks built on stilts where the fishermen keep their equipment. If you go in winter, make sure to carry food with you because the only restaurant in town is closed during winter. Getting across the Lido to the village of Pellestrina by bike will probably take you about 2 hours. If you want to go further, you can take another ferry from Pellestrina to Chioggia, an island even further south in the Venetian lagoon, or you can go directly to Chioggia without getting off at the island of Pellestrina.
For the historically orientated, one can visit the forts on Pellestrina which were restored after falling into disuse. Rent a bike as soon as you get off the vaporetto at the Lido island and you can cycle the whole day long. Opening Hours: Full day long depending on opening hours of the cycle rental shops. One can rent bicycles on the Lido easily in summer but in winter, many of the hire shops may be closed.
