Rising like stone towers from the coastal plains, the Marble Mountains are a cluster of five limestone hills named after the natural elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Located just south of Da Nang, these hills have served as a spiritual sanctuary for centuries and remain a must-visit for anyone travelling through central Vietnam.
The Wonders of Thuy Son
Most visitors focus their time on Thuy Son, or Water Mountain. This is the largest peak and is home to several ancient Buddhist pagodas and hidden shrines. You can choose to hike up the stone steps or take a glass elevator to the main gate. Once at the top, the Vong Giang Tower offers a stunning view of the other four mountains and the surrounding countryside.
Hidden Caves and Shrines
The highlight of the journey is exploring the massive caves carved into the cliffs. The Huyen Khong Cave is the most famous, featuring high ceilings with holes that let in beams of natural light. Inside, the air is cool and filled with the scent of incense, creating a very peaceful atmosphere. Another interesting spot is the Am Phu Cave, which features a dramatic walk through a Buddhist depiction of the afterlife.
