Walking tour of Burano

Historic walking tour of Burano island

Like many parts the Venetian Lagoon, Burano was founded by some inhabitants of the Roman city of Altino during the Barbarian invasions. Just like Venice, it is divided into “Sestieri” (districts): San Martino Sinistro, San Martino Destro, San Mauro, Terranova and Giudecca (not to be confused with the homonymous island). While the lace sewing school founds its history on a romantic legend of a fisherman’s love for his girlfriend, the origin of the coloured houses that make the island unique is unknown. They are possibly related to a family name or more likely, were painted in order to help fishermen find the island during foggy days (not a rarity for Burano).

Don’t forget to try out a small piece of tradition with “Bussolai”, a typical Biscuit made in Burano. It's a kind of yellow doughnut and made of eggs, flour, butter and sugar.

Did you know that the name Burano comes from the word Boreana, referring to the northern door of the city?
