Kusamba Salt Making

See the salt making process yourself and take this opportunity to learn about traditional arts in Bali
Kusamba beach is located around 45 Kilometers northeast of Kuta.  The driving duration takes about one hour. This fishing village is the home of local farmers that produce a natural or organic sea salt. The local practices of making a sea salts are the heritage passed down through generations. This is most likely the last generation to practice this ancient art as the youngsters are not willing to do so anymore.

THE WAY  TO MAKE KUSAMBA SEA SALT:

1. The farmer uses a teku-teku (a sea water container made of palm stem) to bring the seawater to a drying area
2. The water is splashed to the black sand
3. The dried sand is taken to the sand filtration system
4. The seawater is distilled in the sand filtration to get the first brine
5. The brine is distilled again about 3-4 times to get the pure brine
6. The pure distilled brine is put in vessels made from coconut timber
7. The crystal salts that emerge on the surface of the brine are hand-raked and drained to remove the excess brine.

You could participate to learn and help the local farmer to complete the process. This is an excellent way to understand the lifestyle of local families that work very hard to provide for the next generations.

The amount of sea salt produced depends on the weather. On a good day, they are able to produce up to 10 kilograms, typically during the dry season in April to October. Ten or fifteen years ago, there were about 200 families in the village practicing sea salt farming. Now, they are only 20-25 families, and you can help keep this tradition alive by supporting them.
