Cinque Terre Hiking Guide: Trails, Tips & Must-Know Info

Cinque Terre Hiking Adventure

Cinque Terre Hiking Adventure

For travelers who want to truly earn their breathtaking views, this activity is a dedicated hiking experience through the stunning trails of Cinque Terre. This journey is not just about visiting the villages, but about immersing yourself in the landscape that connects them, offering an unparalleled perspective on this iconic coastline.

A Closer Look at the Trails

The Cinque Terre hiking network is extensive, with over 120 kilometers of trails. While some paths are free, the main coastal route, the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Path), requires a Cinque Terre Card. Trail conditions, especially on the Blue Path, can change frequently due to landslides, so it's essential to check the official National Park website or a local information point for the latest status before you start.

  • Riomaggiore to Manarola (Via dell'Amore): Approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) and very easy. This is a wide, paved, and flat path. After a long period of closure, this section has now reopened. However, it requires a separate reservation and ticket in addition to the Cinque Terre Card.

  • Manarola to Corniglia: Approximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles) and easy, with minimal elevation changes. This section has been closed for a very long period due to landslides and is not expected to reopen until at least 2028.

  • Corniglia to Vernazza: Approximately 3.2 km (2 miles) and moderate. This is where the trail becomes more challenging with a steep climb out of Corniglia. It offers panoramic views, terraced vineyards, and beautiful sea vistas.

  • Vernazza to Monterosso al Mare: Approximately 3.3 km (2.1 miles) and moderate to difficult. This is one of the most strenuous sections with many steep stone steps, particularly leaving Vernazza. The trail offers some of the most iconic views of Vernazza and Monterosso.

Alternative and High-Level Trails
For more experienced hikers or those wanting to avoid crowds and closed sections of the Blue Path, a network of higher-elevation trails runs through the mountains. These trails are generally more strenuous but offer spectacular, sweeping views of the entire coastline and are free to access. A popular alternative is to take a higher path to bypass the closed Manarola-Corniglia section.
