If you have just 24 hours to soak up the glamour of the French Riviera’s crown jewel, here is how to live the high life without getting lost in the glitz.
Morning: The "Rock" and Royal Vibes
- The Prince’s Palace: Try to get here by 11:55 AM sharp to see the Changing of the Guard. It’s a classic tradition that happens every single day
- The Views: Walk around the palace walls for an incredible view of Port Hercule. This is the spot to take that famous photo of the millions of dollars worth of yachts lined up in the water.
- Oceanographic Museum: Even if you aren't a "museum person," this building is stunning. It’s built right into the side of the cliff.
Lunch: Chic Brasseries or Harbor Views
- What to eat: Try a Barbagiuan. It’s Monaco’s national dish, a tasty little fried pastry stuffed with Swiss chard and ricotta.
Afternoon: The Glitz of Monte Carlo
- Casino Square (Carré d'Or): This is the heart of the action. Even if you don’t go inside the Casino de Monte Carlo, the square outside is the best place in the world for car spotting. You’ll see more Ferraris and Lamborghinis here in ten minutes than you’ll see in a year anywhere else.
- Luxury Shopping: Walk through the Metropole Shopping Monte Carlo. It’s fancy, marble covered, and very air conditioned perfect for a break from the sun.
- The Gardens: Walk through the Casino Gardens (Les Jardins du Casino) for some peace and quiet amongst the fountains.
Evening: Dinner and the Casino Sparkle
- Dinner at the Port: For a fancy dinner, the restaurants overlooking the harbor are unbeatable
- The Casino Experience: If you want to go inside the Casino, remember there is a dress code (no shorts or flipflops). You’ll need your passport to get in, and there is usually an entry fee for the private rooms, but the lobby is free to enter and absolutely beautiful.
How to Get There from Nice
- By Train: This is the easiest way. The train from Nice takes about 20 minutes and the views of the coast along the way are some of the best in France.
- By Bus: The #600 bus is cheaper (about €2.50) and takes a very scenic route along the cliffs, but it can be a bit crowded in the summer.
