Discovering the Joys of Hygge in Denmark

Written by Gia Gera Nov 20, 2023
I recently visited Denmark, and discovered why it's such an enchanting country. Known for its Hygge culture, the stories of Hans Christian Andersen, and the beloved Lego toy, Denmark simply has it all. From my exciting trip, below are a few amazing things about this delightful nation.

Denmark is renowned for the word "Hygge”(pronounced hoo-gah), a feeling of cosiness and warmth in the atmosphere and in oneself. Hygge culture is important in Danish society because it helps to create a sense of community, connection, and contentment in the country. This Danish concept is often described as "cosiness," but it goes beyond just being cosy and comfortable. It is all about enjoying the simple things in life and savouring time spent with friends and family. By actively engaging in these activities, people are able to make meaningful connections with those around them and find joy in the present moment. This positive thinking and approach to life has a lasting impact on someone's happiness and mental health, which is why it is so important in Danish society.

Denmark is a pet-friendly place - stores, zoos, theme parks and trains all accept pets without issue. Even on planes, owners can take their dogs along for the ride. This means that children have the opportunity to create strong bonds with their pets and learn to be responsible pet owners. Hygge culture in Denmark also allows pets to be in the same room when eating dinner and other activities, further reinforcing the importance of nurturing relationships between people and their animals.

Denmark is also a great destination to learn outdoor activities in all seasons - biking, hockey, sailing, skiing and more. With a long coastline and plenty of trails and wooden bridges, there is no shortage of activities to choose from. There are also plenty of parks and playgrounds, making it a great place to play and explore.

Denmark, especially Copenhagen, is a haven for cyclists. Separate paths line roads, and bike rentals from Christiania bikes to mountain bikes line sidewalks. Thanks to separate lanes for cyclists, and respect for cyclists by cars and buses alike, visitors and residents alike can quickly and cheaply get around the city. Plus, it does not hurt that this is the healthier option to get from one point to another. With such a commitment to the environment, it is no surprise that the country has earned its title as the happiest country in the world!

One of Denmark's most amazing accomplishments is their invention of the world renowned LEGO toy! Therefore, it's no surprise that their Legoland theme-park is one of the best in the world! The theme park includes all sorts of crazy rides - a triple decker sofa experience, a haunted house and so much more. Nearby, the Legoland Holiday village is located. It is a legoland themed resort, filled with many little villas. They had animals, ninjago and other themed houses. There were massive, amazing lego structures scattered about the place, each built piece by piece.

Lastly, I want to talk about how Denmark was the home of famous story writer Hans Christian Andersen. He is the author of many children's books that are still cherished today, such as Thumbelina and The Ugly Duckling. But his most popular book by far is The Little Mermaid. In honour of his best-selling book, there is a well-known statue of the little mermaid on The Langelinie Pavilion. It is a famous tourist attraction for many and you will never see it without company. En route to Langelinie Pavilion lies The Kastellet, a Danish military base. It is somewhat of an island in the shape of a star surrounded by a moat. The soldiers wear the traditional camouflage suit and walk in perfect unison. There are also remains of old cannons, stationed near the edge of the Kastellet.

I learned some fascinating things while in Denmark. I hope you were inspired to experience Denmark and discover your own secrets. Thank you for reading!
